Reverse Osmosis is the finest level of Filtration available. The RO membrane acts as a barrier to all dissolved solids and inorganic molecules with a molecular weight greater than approximately 100. Water molecules, on the other hand, pass freely through the membrane creating a purified product stream. Rejection of dissolved salts is typically 95% to greater than 99%.

Working Principle

Osmosis takes place when pure water flows from a dilute saline solution through a membrane into a higher concentrated saline solution. Consider a Semi Permeable membrane is placed between two compartments, which is permeable to water, but not to salt. If there is salt solution in one compartment and pure water in the other, the membrane will allow water to travel to other side, but stop the salt.

As the system tries to reach equilibrium, water will pass from pure to saline water compartment and dilute it. But if we talk of Reverse Osmosis, the opposite occurs due to application of intense pressure, and thus pure water is concentrated on one side of the compartment.
